Franklin Square’s Oldest Bar Still Pours Its Own Beer

Empire Brewing Company has been making beer in Syracuse since 1994, which puts it among the longest-running craft breweries in New York State. That’s not a boast — it’s just useful context for understanding what you’re walking into on Franklin Street.

The building itself is a converted 19th-century factory in Franklin Square, a neighborhood that sits just north of Armory Square and has the slightly quieter energy that comes from being adjacent to the more trafficked blocks. Inside, the ceilings are high, the brick is original, and the brewing tanks are visible through glass behind the bar. It doesn’t feel like a set piece. The tanks are operational; the beer in your glass was likely made within that same building.

The tap list rotates, but regulars count on a few anchors: the Cream Ale is clean and approachable, the kind of thing you can drink two of without thinking much about it, which is a compliment. The White Aphro — a Belgian-style witbier — has been around long enough to feel like a fixture. If you’re visiting in fall or winter, ask what seasonal is available; Empire’s darker offerings tend to be more interesting than their summer releases. A pint runs around $7 to $8, which is fair for downtown Syracuse.

Food here gets taken more seriously than you’d expect from a brewpub. The kitchen does a decent burger, but the shareable plates are worth ordering. The pretzel with beer cheese is exactly what it should be — no frills, just generous and hot. The wings are good without being remarkable. Where the menu earns more attention is in the sourced proteins and locally grown produce; Empire has been connected to their own farm operation in Cazenovia for years, so the supply chain for certain ingredients is shorter than most restaurants in the city can claim. You’ll see it listed on the menu where it applies — not prominently, but honestly.

The room works for different kinds of visits. On a weekday afternoon it’s calm enough to have a conversation. On a Friday evening it fills up, especially in warmer months when the patio opens along Franklin Street. The patio doesn’t have a view worth writing home about, but it’s pleasant and the street has light foot traffic. Service has been consistently competent over multiple visits — attentive without hovering.

What keeps Empire relevant after three decades isn’t novelty. Craft beer in Syracuse has more options now than it did in 1994, and some newer spots produce technically impressive results. But Empire has accumulated a kind of institutional steadiness — the menu is refined rather than trendy, the beer quality is reliable, and the space has worn in well. It’s the kind of place that locals stop mentioning because they assume everyone knows about it, which sometimes means visitors miss it entirely.

Parking on Franklin Street can be tight on evenings, but there’s a surface lot on the block. Worth planning for. Empire is open most days starting at noon, with the kitchen running until late evening. If you’re in the neighborhood for any reason, it’s an easy stop that rarely disappoints.
