Proof That Scottsdale’s Best Patio Belongs to Mastro’s Ocean Club

Most people assume Mastro’s Ocean Club is a steakhouse that happens to serve fish. It’s the opposite. The seafood tower alone — a three-tiered chrome monument stacked with king crab legs, oysters, jumbo shrimp, and lobster claws — arrives at the table before you’ve even decided on a drink, and it reframes everything you thought you knew about landlocked Arizona dining.

The restaurant sits inside Scottsdale Quarter on North Scottsdale Road, which sounds like a mall address and, yes, technically it is. But step out onto the main floor or grab a seat at the bar, and the retail context evaporates. The room is dim, the ceiling is low, and the whole place has the particular hum of somewhere people are genuinely celebrating. It’s a lot — the music, the servers in black, the ice sculptures — but it earns the drama rather than faking it.

I went the first time expecting to be underwhelmed by a chain steakhouse in a shopping center. I went back three weeks later specifically for the swordfish. It’s pan-roasted, served with a truffle butter sauce that somehow doesn’t overwhelm the fish, and it costs around $55 — which is roughly what you’d spend on a decent entree anywhere in this category. The bone-in ribeye, if you’re staying traditional, runs $75 or so and comes out properly rested. The sides are meant to be shared: lobster mashed potatoes, creamed corn with blue crab, crispy Brussels sprouts that hold their own against everything else on the table.

What I didn’t expect was how much I’d like the bar program. The Old Fashioned is correctly made — no fruit muddled into oblivion, real ice, good whiskey — and the wine list is long enough to be interesting without being exhausting. Happy hour exists, quietly, on weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m., when a few bar bites and wines come down to something more approachable.

The patio is the real underrated piece. Scottsdale Quarter is an open-air development, so the outdoor seating at Mastro’s faces the main pedestrian corridor and catches a cross-breeze on most evenings from October through April. On a dry November night with the string lights up and the desert air finally cooling down, it’s one of the more pleasant places to sit in the whole city. Summer is another matter — go inside, let the AC do its work, and don’t feel guilty about it.

Reservations on weekend evenings are genuinely hard to get, especially during peak season, which runs roughly November through March when snowbirds fill the city. Book two weeks out if you can. If you’re walking in without a reservation on a Friday night, the bar is your best bet; they hold some seats for walk-ins and the full menu is available there.

It’s not an everyday place, and it doesn’t pretend to be. But the assumption that it’s just a flashy chain coasting on its name doesn’t hold up once you’re actually sitting down and the food is in front of you. Sometimes the obvious choice is obvious for a reason.
