Athens Soccer Club Faces Loss of Home Field as New Renaissance School Planned

For many in Athens, Alabama, Ferman Elmore Field on Clinton Street is more than a patch of grass – it’s a place where generations learned to kick a ball and forge friendships. Matthew Cooper, who first stepped onto the field as a child, recalled, “It’s sad. This is the first field I played on as a small child. My first time kicking a soccer ball was right there, a lot of history.”

School construction threatens the club’s home

The city’s plan to build the new Athens Renaissance School on the same site means Cottontown United Soccer Club will lose the field that has served Athens students and athletes for decades. Byron Godby, the club’s director of coaching, warned that finding another venue in Athens will be difficult. “Athens has nothing. There hasn’t been a soccer field built in Athens in 30 years,” he said. “We won’t have a home field anymore. We won’t have a place to host a game.” The club has never been able to host a tournament because it lacks a facility the size of those in neighboring cities.

City officials acknowledge the impact

Athens City Schools Superintendent Beth Patton said the school plans are still in early stages but emphasized the district’s commitment to preserving the site’s role as a community gathering place. “While the landscape will change, the site will continue to be a place where students learn, grow, build friendships, and make memories,” Patton said in a statement.

Godby and Cooper expressed gratitude to the district for allowing the club to use the field for so many years and asked that the city consider providing a new soccer field for the club and local youth programs.

Community farewell walk scheduled

Before the field is repurposed, the community is invited to a final walk‑through to celebrate its history. The event will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Clinton Street campus. Residents, former players, and families are encouraged to attend and share memories of the field’s role in their lives.

What the loss means for local recreation

The disappearance of Ferman Elmore Field highlights a broader challenge for Athens: limited recreational infrastructure. Without a dedicated soccer venue, youth leagues may have to travel farther for practices and games, increasing costs for families and potentially reducing participation. Local leaders have previously discussed the need for more parks and sports facilities, but funding and land availability have been obstacles.

City council members have not yet voted on a specific replacement site, but the issue is expected to be part of upcoming planning‑commission meetings. Stakeholders hope that the new school’s design could incorporate a multi‑purpose field that serves both students and community teams.

Looking ahead

As Athens prepares for the Renaissance School, the soccer club and its supporters are urging the city to prioritize a solution that preserves the town’s strong tradition of youth sports. “Soccer has been a cornerstone of our community for decades,” Godby said. “We want to make sure future generations have a place to play and grow.”

The final walk‑through offers a chance for the community to honor the field’s legacy while advocating for a new home that reflects Athens’ commitment to families, faith, and freedom to enjoy wholesome recreation.
