Norfolk, Va. – The Spartans entered the final minutes of their home game against North Carolina Central confident they could secure the first MEAC victory of the 2026 season. Holding a 28‑23 lead with 1:34 remaining, Norfolk State had possession and the Eagles had exhausted all of their timeouts.
Late‑game turnover decides the outcome
On second down, quarterback Deljay Bailey took the snap, moved left and was hit by an Eagle defender. The ball came loose, and NCCU recovered, quickly converting the turnover into a 26‑yard touchdown pass from Josh Jones to Mekhi Wall with just 27 seconds left on the clock. The Eagles took a 29‑28 lead and held on for the win after a missed two‑point conversion and a failed 36‑yard field‑goal attempt by Norfolk State’s Marco Peery.
Coaches react to the mishap
Spartan head coach Michael Vick expressed confusion over the final sequence. “I don’t know what happened at the end of the game,” Vick said. “I put my headset down, I called victory formation and all we had to do was just take a knee, kneel the clock out. That’s just situational football. I don’t know what happened in regards to that. I looked up and we were running the ball and then I saw the fumble.”
Vick noted that had the Spartans knelt on second and third down, they could have run the clock down to under 15 seconds before potentially punting the ball back to the Eagles, forcing a defensive stand with only a few seconds remaining.
Statistical highlights
Despite the loss, Bailey delivered a strong offensive performance, completing 22 of 26 pass attempts for 278 yards and two touchdowns, and also scoring on the ground. The Spartans’ defense forced four turnovers, including two interceptions by safety Jordan Saunders. Norfolk State opened the game with a 21‑7 lead at halftime and extended it to 28‑17 early in the fourth quarter after a rushing touchdown by Jalyn Daniels. A missed 25‑yard field goal by Jake Walker later in the quarter kept the game within reach for the Eagles.
Looking ahead
The defeat drops Norfolk State to a 4‑6 overall record and 0‑3 in MEAC play. The Spartans will travel to Morgan State next Saturday to try to rebound from the heartbreaking loss.
For fans and alumni, the game serves as a reminder of how quickly momentum can shift in college football, especially when a single play determines the outcome. Norfolk State will look to regroup, focus on execution in the closing minutes, and aim for a stronger finish to the season.
