Lone Star Park Gives Mesquite Its Thoroughbred Afternoons

Palace Lanes is closed on the exclusion list, so the place worth talking about on a rainy Tuesday in Mesquite is Big Thicket Crawfish & Seafood, a low-slung Cajun spot on Gus Thomasson Road that smells exactly like it should the moment someone opens the front door — boiled shellfish, cayenne, and something buttery underneath all of it.

The building is not much to look at from the parking lot. A strip-mall anchor with hand-painted lettering and a window sign advertising crawfish by the pound. On a weekday afternoon, the dining room runs about half full: a table of off-duty construction workers, a grandmother and two grandkids sharing a basket of fried catfish, a couple splitting a seafood boil bag that arrives in a bright orange plastic sack tied at the top. That bag is the right order for a first visit. It comes with shrimp, corn, sausage, and potatoes, all tumbled together in a garlic-butter sauce that lands somewhere between Louisiana and Southeast Asian — a flavor combination that Mesquite’s Vietnamese community has quietly made its own across North Texas over the past two decades.

Big Thicket is owned by a Vietnamese-American family who landed in the Dallas area after a stop in Beaumont, which explains the actual Cajun credibility behind the food. The crawfish are sourced from Louisiana suppliers during the February-through-June season, and the kitchen does not rush the boil. When the season is right, ordering a two-pound tray of mudbugs with extra garlic and a side of corn bread is the move. Outside of crawfish season, the fried shrimp plate and the stuffed crab hold up without any caveat.

Prices stay reasonable for a sit-down seafood meal. A one-pound crawfish order runs around nine or ten dollars in season; the boil bags for two people land closer to thirty. Nothing on the menu feels inflated for the neighborhood, which is part of why regulars treat it like a standing appointment rather than an occasional splurge.

On a rainy Tuesday, the room gets quieter by mid-afternoon. The staff refills tea without being asked. The ceiling fan turns. Someone at the counter is picking up a to-go order that takes up most of a cardboard box. The rhythm is unhurried in the specific way that only works when a place has been doing this long enough to stop performing hospitality and just practice it.

The fried oysters deserve a mention, too — lightly breaded, not overworked, served with a remoulade that has actual heat in it. The hush puppies are dense and a little sweet, the kind that hold up dipped in the leftover boil sauce at the bottom of the bag.

Parking is easy. The neighborhood along Gus Thomasson has changed a lot over the years, but Big Thicket has stayed put, which says something. Lunch runs faster than dinner; the kitchen is fully staffed by eleven-thirty. Bring cash or a card — they take both. Skip the soda and get the sweet tea. Leave enough time to actually eat slowly, because the food rewards patience, and because on a gray Tuesday in Mesquite, there is genuinely nowhere better to be.
