Corbo’s Is Gone. Presti’s Fills the Hole Nicely

The parking lot on Murray Hill Road fills up fast on weekend evenings, and that should tell you something. Angelo’s Pizza has been operating out of the same Little Italy storefront since 1956, which means it has outlasted about four generations of dining trends without adjusting its posture even slightly. The red-and-white checkered tablecloths are not ironic. The Chianti bottles with candles dripping down them are not ironic. Nothing here is ironic.

You walk in and the place is smaller than you remember every time. Maybe a dozen tables, low ceilings, a counter near the back where the pies come out. The smell hits you immediately — garlic, tomato, something charred in a good way — and if you’ve been here before, some part of your brain resets to whatever year you first showed up. It has that quality. The regulars know the staff by name and vice versa, and new customers get sized up briefly before being seated with reasonable efficiency.

The pizza is the reason. Thin crust, properly done, with a bottom that gets just enough char without crossing into cracker territory. The sauce leans toward sweet and bright rather than heavy — it doesn’t taste like it came from a can, which sounds like a low bar but isn’t, in this city, at this price point. A large cheese runs around sixteen dollars. Toppings are what you’d expect: sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, the classics. Nobody comes to Angelo’s for the novelty toppings. If you want duck confit on your pizza, you’ve taken a wrong turn.

The pasta is straightforward and honest. The lasagna is thick and comforting in a way that makes you understand why people associate Italian-American food with Sunday afternoons. The antipasto plate is generous enough to split and cheap enough that you’ll order it without thinking too hard. The garlic bread arrives hot and without ceremony.

Service is fast, occasionally brusque, always competent. This is not the kind of place where your server crouches down to tell you about their journey with food. They bring your food, refill your water, and leave you alone, which is a service style that deserves more respect than it currently receives in the dining conversation.

The wine list is short and priced to move. Beer selection is similarly no-frills. The dessert case near the register has cannoli and a few other items; you should get one on the way out just because it’s there and you’re already here.

Little Italy proper has been going through the usual pressures — development creep, rising rents, the occasional new concept that opens and closes in eighteen months. Angelo’s sits through all of it. Dinner for two with drinks and a shared appetizer will run you somewhere in the forty-five to sixty dollar range, which is not nothing, but is considerably less than what you’d spend at any of the newer Italian-adjacent restaurants that opened in the last decade and may or may not still be open by the time you read this.

Go on a weeknight if you can manage it. The crowds thin out, the room gets quieter, and you can actually hear the person across the table from you. If you go on a Friday or Saturday, budget some time at the bar or be prepared to wait on the sidewalk. The wait is not long. It’s also just part of going to Angelo’s, so plan accordingly.
