Florida Ranks Sixth Nationwide for Holiday Pedestrian Deaths, Study Shows

As cooler weather brings holiday shoppers to Florida’s streets and malls, a recent study highlights a lingering safety concern for walkers. Wilk Law Personal Injury & Car Accident Lawyers analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) for the October‑through‑December period from 2020 to 2024. The findings show Florida ranks sixth in the nation for pedestrian fatalities during the holiday corridor, with 9.64 deaths per million residents.

State‑by‑State Comparison

Only five states posted higher per‑capita rates. New Mexico led the list with 13.31 deaths per million, followed by South Carolina (10.77), Arizona (10.64), Louisiana (10.16) and Delaware (9.81). Florida sits just ahead of Mississippi (8.96), Nevada (8.74), Georgia (8.60) and California (8.38). While neighboring Georgia placed ninth nationally with 8.60 deaths per million, Florida’s risk remains roughly one‑and‑a‑half times higher than its northwestern neighbor.

Five‑Year Fatality Totals

During the five‑year window, Florida recorded 1,076 pedestrian deaths in the holiday months, averaging 215.2 fatalities each season across an average population of 22.3 million. California, with a larger population, posted the highest total number of deaths, but Florida’s per‑capita rate remains among the worst.

Trend Over Time

The study notes a modest downward trend after a peak in 2021. That year saw 225 pedestrians killed, up slightly from 224 in 2020. Numbers fell to 216 in 2022 and 215 in 2023, before dropping nearly 9 % to 196 in 2024 – the lowest total in the five‑year span.

What the Numbers Mean for Floridians

While the recent decline is encouraging, the per‑capita risk remains high enough to warrant attention from local officials, law‑enforcement agencies, and community groups. The study’s methodology adjusted each state’s fatality count for population size, providing a clearer picture of risk than raw totals alone.

Local Response and Safety Tips

City and county leaders across Florida have begun emphasizing pedestrian safety measures ahead of the busy holiday shopping season. Recommendations include:

  • Using well‑lit crosswalks and obeying traffic signals.
  • Drivers reducing speed in high‑traffic pedestrian zones.
  • Pedestrians staying visible, especially in low‑light conditions.
  • Local businesses promoting safe walking routes to and from their locations.

Community organizations are also stepping up outreach, offering free safety workshops and distributing reflective gear to seniors and school‑age children.

Looking Ahead

Continued monitoring of holiday‑season pedestrian fatalities will help gauge the effectiveness of safety initiatives. As Florida works to lower its ranking, residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and support local efforts aimed at making streets safer for everyone.
