Little Big Horn College faces show‑cause sanction; must complete audits by June 2027

The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) has placed Little Big Horn College, a Montana tribal institution, on a show‑cause sanction – the commission’s most serious warning. The college must prove why its accreditation should not be withdrawn.

Four key areas of concern

NWCCU officials identified four critical domains that the college must improve: board governance, leadership, campus safety and financial audit compliance. The financial audit requirement is especially demanding, as the college will need to complete a comprehensive review covering three full fiscal years and part of a fourth.

“That’s a complex financial function,” said Janine Pease, LBHC’s founding president and current faculty member. “Not just one year, but three years and perhaps some of a fourth.”

Board response and remediation plan

Board member Shawn Real Bird echoed the seriousness of the situation and noted that the college has already engaged external experts. “We have a deadline of June 30, 2027 to finish all financial audits,” Real Bird said. “We do have an internal investigator, a criminal investigator that is approved by contract and by a motion. In addition to that, we have a forensic auditor.”

The board has also begun developing a teach‑out plan, as required by the accreditor. The plan will identify partner institutions that can accept LBHC students should the college be forced to close any programs.

Impact on students and the community

While the college remains open and accredited for now, the teach‑out requirement underscores the potential risk to students’ educational pathways. “They receive the education and the vision that Chief Plenty Coups set forth for the Crow people,” Real Bird emphasized, highlighting the cultural significance of the institution.

Local leaders and tribal members are watching the process closely, recognizing that the college serves as a cornerstone for preserving Crow heritage and providing higher‑education opportunities to tribal youth.

Next steps

The college must submit evidence of compliance with the four mandated areas by the June 2027 deadline. Failure to do so could result in the withdrawal of accreditation, which would jeopardize federal funding and the ability of students to transfer credits.

Stakeholders hope that the combined efforts of the board, external auditors and the college’s administration will satisfy the commission’s concerns and keep Little Big Horn College on a stable path for future generations.
