Morehead rallies for Kristin Norman as she battles cervical cancer

Kristin Norman received a stage III cervical cancer diagnosis in October 2024. Since then she has endured chemotherapy, radiation, brachytherapy, immunotherapy, targeted radiation and other aggressive treatments. Despite her efforts, the disease has continued to progress, and her most recent therapy was unsuccessful.

Because the necessary treatments are not covered by insurance, Norman estimates she must pay $40,400 out of pocket, not including additional costs for lodging, food, transportation and travel between Kentucky and Florida. She now resides in Tampa, Florida, where she is pursuing further medical options.

Community response in Morehead

Within days of learning of Kristin’s situation, residents of Morehead, Kentucky, rallied to help. Her husband, Zach Norman, who runs the local barbershop Ace of Fades, set up a GoFundMe page. The campaign reached its goal in less than 72 hours, providing crucial financial relief.

But the generosity did not stop at online donations. Long‑time friend Adam McCarty organized a benefit event titled “Music for the Fight,” scheduled for Saturday, November 7, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Postal Square & Trail 109. Local musicians and businesses will perform, and admission is free, allowing the entire community to show support.

“You have a community and a tribe that’s willing to support,” McCarty said, noting that the outpouring of aid reflects the spirit of Eastern Kentucky’s Appalachian roots. “This is truly what an Eastern Kentucky Appalachian community is all about.”

Family perspective

For Zach, the outpouring of love and assistance brings hope amid a difficult journey. “I just want to go back to worrying about what we’re going to have for dinner and what we’re going to do this weekend, not whether she’s going to get through this sickness,” he said. He travels to Florida when possible to be by Kristin’s side, while continuing to run his barbershop, which he describes as his sanctuary.

Both Zach and Kristin remain focused on the ultimate goal: returning home together once treatment stabilizes her condition. “We’re just hopeful that at the end of all this she gets to come home,” Zach added.

How to help

Community members can attend the benefit concert on November 7 or contribute directly to the GoFundMe campaign. The event aims to raise additional funds to cover the ongoing medical expenses and the logistical costs of traveling between Morehead and Tampa.

Kristin’s story has resonated far beyond her immediate circle, inspiring prayers, messages of encouragement, and tangible assistance from neighbors, local businesses and volunteers. The collective effort underscores the power of a close‑knit community rallying around one of its own during a health crisis.
