Kenosha, Wis. – On Saturday, the city will welcome the public inside 52 buildings that are normally off‑limits, as part of the free “Keys to Kenosha” open‑house event. The initiative, conceived by Tim Casey, Director of Kenosha City Development, highlights the city’s rich manufacturing past while celebrating the influx of new construction that is reshaping the downtown area.
What visitors can expect
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants can walk through historic government offices, churches, museums, local businesses and even ride the historic streetcar. The event offers a rare glimpse into the architectural evolution of Kenosha, blending the old favorites with the modern structures that are rapidly changing the city’s skyline.
Community involvement
Organizers anticipate more than 100 volunteers will staff the sites, guiding guests and ensuring a safe, informative experience. “It’s really what Kenosha is all about,” said Mark Molinaro Jr., Vice President of Partners in Design Architects and a native of the city. “The Keys to Kenosha helps explain the transformation we’re undergoing and encourages civic pride.”
Planning and future growth
The event took just over a year to coordinate, with city officials, architects and local volunteers working together to secure access to each location. Both Casey and Molinaro expressed hopes to expand the program in future years, adding more sites and deepening community engagement.
Why the event matters
By opening doors to historic landmarks and newer developments alike, the Keys to Kenosha initiative fosters a better appreciation of the city’s assets and encourages residents to take pride in their neighborhoods. “There’s nothing wrong with a little civic pride,” Casey said, emphasizing the role of such events in strengthening community bonds.
How to participate
Admission is free, and a full list of participating locations is available on the Keys to Kenosha website. No registration is required; visitors simply show up during the designated hours. The event is an excellent opportunity for families, history enthusiasts and newcomers to discover the unique blend of heritage and progress that defines Kenosha today.
