What Exactly Is Happening at the Reno Neon Line?

What is the Reno Neon Line, and is it actually worth seeking out?

That question comes up a lot, usually from visitors who’ve spotted the glowing sculptures along West Fourth Street and aren’t quite sure what they’ve stumbled into. The short answer: it’s a half-mile stretch of publicly accessible neon and LED art installations running roughly from downtown toward the Sands casino corridor, anchored by pieces from artists like RETNA and Dabs Myla. The longer answer is that it’s one of the more polarizing things Reno has done to itself in recent memory, and that’s precisely what makes it worth a walk.

The project was driven largely by real estate developer and art collector Bill Harrah, Jr., who began accumulating vintage neon signs and commissioning new large-scale works to line the street outside his properties. What resulted is an outdoor gallery that blurs the line between salvaged Americana and contemporary public art. Some pieces are massive — towering steel-and-neon sculptures that glow in deep reds and blues after dark. Others are restored vintage signs from motels and casinos that no longer exist, mounted on pedestals or building facades like artifacts from a neon graveyard.

The best time to visit is after sundown, ideally on a weeknight when foot traffic is light enough to actually look at things without navigating a crowd. Weekend evenings can draw a mix of bar-hoppers and curious tourists, which isn’t bad company, but the installations read better when there’s some quiet around them. Standing in front of the RETNA mural piece — lettering that looks like Arabic calligraphy but isn’t — with the glow of a dozen vintage signs behind you, it’s hard not to feel like Reno is trying to figure out what it wants to be, which is an honest reflection of the city at this particular moment.

There’s no admission and no set entry point. Most people start near the intersection of West Fourth and Lake Street and walk west, though the boundary of what’s officially part of the Neon Line versus what’s just a lit-up building shifts depending on who’s counting. A few businesses along the strip have leaned into the foot traffic — there’s a bar or two, some food options — but the experience is primarily pedestrian and visual. Bring a charged phone; the lighting conditions after dark are genuinely photogenic, and the vintage signs in particular are the kind of thing people spend real money to see in photography books.

Not everyone loves it. Locals who remember Fourth Street before the investment are sometimes skeptical of the curation, the gentrification adjacent to it, or just the idea that a private developer is essentially programming a public street. Those are fair tensions, and they’re part of what makes the Neon Line interesting as a cultural object, not just a visual one. It’s not a neutral piece of infrastructure. It has a point of view.

What it offers, practically speaking, is a free, walkable, distinctly Reno experience that doesn’t require a casino floor or a trail map. It works as a detour before or after dinner, as an evening destination on its own, or as the kind of thing that makes a good twenty-minute stop during a longer downtown loop. The neon does the heavy lifting. The street just has to hold still.
