TOLEDO, Ohio – A long‑standing eyesore on Cone Street that had threatened the safety of nearby residents was finally torn down after the city approved an emergency demolition. The two‑story house, vacant for at least nine years, suffered a collapsed roof, broken windows and a caved‑in foundation that raised serious concerns for neighbors.
Neighbor’s Safety Concerns Prompt Action
Rebecca Brown, who lives just four feet from the deteriorating property, said the building’s condition had become a nightmare. ‘I was terrified that the house could collapse onto my home, or that it might bring my whole house down,’ Brown explained. She also worried about the safety of her children and grandchildren.
Brown contacted local officials repeatedly, reaching out to the city’s Engage Toledo program and her congressional representatives. ‘I used the proper channels, called Engage Toledo, and even spoke with a couple of my congresspeople,’ she said.
City Response and Emergency Demolition
According to a spokesperson for the City of Toledo, a report about the unsafe structure was received in September. The city scheduled the property for emergency demolition pending the availability of funding. On Friday, the day after 13 Action News visited the site, demolition crews arrived and safely removed the building.
Brown expressed relief as the demolition proceeded. ‘I’m elated, I’m happy about it. I feel so much better. I can sleep better, my grandson can play freely,’ she said, noting that the removal of the hazard has made Cone Street feel much safer.
How Residents Can Report Structural Problems
The City of Toledo encourages residents to report any structural concerns through the Engage Toledo portal. Prompt reporting helps city officials assess risks and allocate resources for emergency actions when needed.
Emergency demolition of dangerous, abandoned properties is a critical tool for protecting neighborhoods, preserving property values, and ensuring the safety of families. The swift response in this case demonstrates the city’s commitment to addressing community‑raised safety issues.
Community Impact
With the condemned house gone, neighbors on Cone Street can enjoy a more secure environment. The demolition also eliminates the visual blight that had marred the street for years, contributing to a more pleasant and stable neighborhood atmosphere.
City officials continue to monitor other potentially hazardous structures and urge residents to stay vigilant. By working together, citizens and local government can maintain safe, thriving communities throughout Toledo.
