When the monthly First Friday art walk was suspended following the tragic shooting in October, the Las Vegas Arts District refused to let its creative community sit idle. On Friday, Nov. 6, the district will host an “Art Crawl” that lets artists showcase their work, earn a modest stipend and connect directly with neighborhood patrons.
Community‑driven response
Organizer Sara Godbout, a veteran First Friday participant of more than five years, explained that the pause felt like a cultural shock. “We all knew we couldn’t just sit around and do nothing,” she said. “We made the active choice to do something.” Godbout, who serves on the Arts District Action Coalition and the 18b Arts District Board, helped shape the crawl to keep the district’s vibrant spirit alive.
How the Art Crawl works
More than 20 local businesses will open their doors from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., each paired with an artist who receives a $100 stipend for live painting. Depending on the venue, artists may also have the opportunity to sell their pieces. Attendees are encouraged to wander from shop to shop, meet the makers and support the creators who give the Arts District its unique character.
“It’s all about unity,” Godbout added. “We have so many incredible creatives out here, and businesses, and I’m personally very sad at how everything’s going. I hope this shines a light on them and offers some help. It won’t help everybody, but if it helps some people, that’s what matters most.”
Safety is a top priority
Co‑organizer Tony Chavez, co‑founder of the Arts District Action Coalition, stressed that safety measures are built into every aspect of the event. “We are already in contact with Metro Police for the event, and the Action Coalition will have its own neighborhood‑watch patrol throughout the night,” he said. “If we see anything out of the ordinary, we will act immediately.”
Chavez emphasized that the Arts District remains a welcoming, family‑friendly destination. “We want people to know the Arts District is a fun, awesome place to come down, and we can hold events like this while keeping everyone safe,” he said.

The Art Crawl route begins near the Arts Factory on Charleston Boulevard, heads south along Main Street to Barter Mall, then returns north along Commerce Street.
