As we close out another year of serving Naperville, the November edition of Positively Naperville looks back at the town’s rich heritage while looking forward to the holidays. Our publication, now in its 25th year, remains committed to offering an upbeat, community‑focused perspective on the events and stories that shape daily life here.
Remembering Our Roots
Founded in the late 1990s during the dot‑com boom, Positively Naperville began as a free, monthly newspaper supported by local businesses. Our mission has always been to highlight the bright side of local issues, and we continue to rely on the generous sponsorship of Naperville merchants who welcome readers into their stores and online platforms.
One of the town’s enduring legacies is the Nichols Library, a gift from James L. Nichols, a German‑born immigrant who arrived in America at age six. Nichols graduated from North Central College in 1880 and, on his deathbed in August 1895, bequeathed $10,000 to establish a public library for children—books he himself lacked in youth. The original Nichols Library opened on September 22, 1898, at 110 S. Washington Street, and the historic building still stands today, housing the GIA MIA and sitting beside the Veterans Valor Century Walk sculpture created by Shirley McWorter Moss in 2006.
Honoring Our Veterans
The Veterans Valor sculpture commemorates five World War II servicemen who grew up within a few blocks of each other in Naperville. Residents are invited to observe Veterans Day at 11 a.m. on November 11, a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who defended our freedoms.
Election Season Reflections
While the General Midterm Election season has just concluded, the community remains engaged as we transition to the Consolidated Election season, during which local, county and state lawmakers will be chosen. As James L. Nichols once wrote, “It is your duty as an American citizen to obey the laws, even if they are, in your belief, unjust or unwise,” a sentiment that continues to resonate as citizens consider their civic responsibilities.
Looking Ahead to Thanksgiving
We wish all readers a happy, healthful Thanksgiving Day. May families gather around the table to give thanks for the blessings of community, faith, and the freedoms we cherish.
Thank you for reading, and may the coming weeks be filled with gratitude and fellowship.
