Cary Police Chief Terry Sult Announces Retirement Effective Jan. 15, 2027

Cary, N.C. – After a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years in law enforcement, Chief Terry Sult will step down as the town’s police chief on Jan. 15, 2027. The Cary Police Department confirmed the announcement on Monday, noting that Sult has served as the town’s 14th chief since 2022, following an interim appointment in 2021.

Leadership legacy and strategic planning

During his tenure, Chief Sult focused on strengthening internal leadership capabilities and enhancing the department’s preparedness. He oversaw the development of a comprehensive strategic plan aimed at preserving Cary’s reputation as one of the safest communities in America. Town Manager Russ Overton praised Sult’s contributions, saying, “I want to thank Terry for his work to strengthen leadership capabilities in the department and develop a strategic plan for the future, all while upholding Cary’s reputation as one of the safest communities in America.”

Chief Sult’s reflections

Now 69, Chief Sult explained that he feels it is time to pass the torch. “When I came to Cary, I was asked to address internal leadership development and enhance the Department’s preparedness capabilities. I agreed to three to five years of service. I believe both the Department and I have met those obligations. Now, after 50 years in policing, it’s time to relax and spend time with my family. I want to thank the residents of Cary, the Council, and the Manager for the time we spent together. It’s been an honor,” he said.

Next steps for the department

Overton indicated that the town will begin conversations with the police department in the coming weeks to outline the recruiting process for a new chief. The town’s human‑resources staff will work closely with department leadership to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity of public‑safety operations.

Community impact

Chief Sult’s retirement marks the end of an era for Cary’s law‑enforcement community. Residents have long appreciated the department’s commitment to proactive policing, community outreach, and rapid response. The town’s leadership emphasized that the strategic plan put in place by Chief Sult will guide future initiatives, ensuring that Cary continues to enjoy low crime rates and a high quality of life for families.

Looking ahead

The search for a successor will focus on candidates who share Chief Sult’s dedication to public safety, strong leadership, and community partnership. Town officials expect the hiring process to be transparent and inclusive, inviting input from residents and civic groups who value Cary’s safe, family‑friendly environment.

As Chief Sult prepares for retirement, he looks forward to spending more time with his family and enjoying the community he helped keep safe for decades.
