NFL trade deadline buzz: Colts, Cowboys, Bears and Steelers weigh moves

The NFL trade deadline looms, and teams across the league are weighing options that could reshape rosters before the season’s midpoint. While the market remains fluid, several clubs have emerged as focal points for potential deals.

Indianapolis Colts: rebuilding, but not rushing

After firing general manager Chris Ballard, the Colts entered the offseason in seller mode, moving guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks and sending defensive end DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers. Wide receiver Josh Downs has also requested a trade, fueling speculation of a broader “fire sale.”

Nevertheless, sources say the organization may pause for a few days. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Colts want to see how their Week 9 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys unfolds before revisiting offers on the table. The team’s most intriguing assets remain running back Jonathan Taylor and Downs, both of whom could attract interest if the Colts decide to move forward.

Dallas Cowboys: buyers, not sellers

At 3‑5, the Cowboys sit second in the NFC East and remain within a game of the New York Giants. Despite a recent overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals, insiders argue the club is unlikely to part with wide receiver George Pickens. Rapoport notes Pickens is not under contract for next season, yet the Cowboys’ schedule and divisional position make a sale unlikely.

Instead, Dallas may look to bolster its defense. ESPN analysts Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano have identified Arizona pass rusher Josh Sweat as a possible target. Sweat, in the second year of a four‑year, $76 million contract, could be a trade candidate if the Cowboys can offer a salary adjustment. Adding another edge rusher would complement the Cowboys’ recent defensive acquisitions.

Chicago Bears: building on a defensive win

The Bears recently acquired defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans, a move that paid immediate dividends in a Week 8 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Next Gen Stats showed the Seahawks were limited to 3.0 yards per play when Simmons was on the field, compared with 13.3 yards per play when he was not.

Looking ahead, Bears analyst Seth Walder suggests Miami Dolphins edge rusher Josh Uche could be a logical addition. Uche’s pass‑rush win rate sits in the 60th percentile, and his pressure rate is in the 35th percentile, offering a potential boost alongside Montez Sweat, Austin Booker and Daniel Hardy.

Pittsburgh Steelers: wide‑receiver rumors denied

For weeks, speculation has swirled that the Steelers might add a wide receiver to give Aaron Rodgers another target. Pittsburgh insider Gerry Dulac dismissed the chatter, stating the team is “not seriously pursuing any” trade for a receiver. Dulac reminded readers that the Steelers have already bolstered the position through trades for DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr., as well as recent draft picks.

While fans may wish for another weapon in the passing game, the organization appears focused on other priorities as the deadline approaches.

Other teams watching the market

The Jacksonville Jaguars posted a Halloween‑themed message featuring the word “Weapons,” prompting observers to note the absence of first‑round pick wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, both dealing with injuries at the receiver position, could consider Thomas if he becomes available.

Overall, the trade deadline promises to be a busy period, with clubs balancing immediate needs against long‑term rebuilding strategies. Fans should stay tuned for official announcements as the league heads into the final days of the trade window.
