Georgetown County Council incumbents win decisive victories in District 1 and District 6

Georgetown County voters delivered clear mandates to two Republican candidates in the recent council elections. Chairman Clint Elliott, the incumbent for District 1, won a second term with 69 percent of the vote, easily defeating former Planning Commission member Sandra Bundy.

In District 6, GOP nominee Bill Ringer also swept the race, earning 67 percent of the ballots cast against Democrat Vincent Davis. Both victories underscore the strength of the Republican ticket in the county, especially in precincts where straight‑party voting remains robust.

Straight‑ticket advantage and local dynamics

Bundy entered the District 1 contest as a petition candidate, meaning she did not benefit from straight‑party voting in the four Murrells Inlet precincts. Those precincts typically see an average of 43 percent of votes cast for the GOP ticket, a factor Elliott counted on throughout his campaign. Elliott noted that the straight‑ticket support allowed him to allocate less time campaigning in gated communities that are harder to reach.

“We knew we had big headwinds going into this,” Bundy said after the results, acknowledging the challenges of running without the party line.

Personal touches and community support

Elliott celebrated his win at the back bar of the Inlet Prohibition Company, watching the results on his phone while thinking about his early‑morning work schedule. “I still have a job to get to,” he said, emphasizing his continued commitment to both his public duties and his private employment.

His wife, Marodith Elliott, praised his dedication, saying, “He’s Georgetown born and bred. He wants the best for the area.” Bill Hills, a Planning Commission appointee selected by Elliott, added, “Clint and his supporters campaigned on truth and the Bundy campaign did not. That should stand as an example to the people of Georgetown County.”

Endorsements and future collaboration

Bundy had previously served on the Planning Commission, appointed by former District 1 Council Member John Thomas. After Elliott’s re‑election, he chose not to re‑appoint her, ending her commission service.

Both Bundy and Ringer received backing from local community groups Preserve Murrells Inlet and Keep It Green. Those groups also supported Ringer’s effort to unseat Council Member Stella Mercado, who sought a second term.

Ringer’s primary victory over Mercado was decisive, with 68 percent of the GOP primary vote, bolstered by straight‑ticket support. He expressed optimism about working with his new Democratic colleague, Vincent Davis, who serves as president of the Pawleys Island Civic Club. Davis affirmed his commitment to community advocacy, stating, “Rest assured, I will continue to apply pressure, sitting at the table.”

Implications for Georgetown County

The election outcomes reinforce a Republican‑leaning council that will likely continue to prioritize policies aimed at preserving the county’s quality of life, supporting local businesses, and maintaining the character of coastal communities. With strong straight‑ticket voting patterns and active community group involvement, the council’s agenda appears aligned with the preferences of a majority of Georgetown voters.
