Lakewood, Colo. – A tragic shooting on Thursday evening claimed the life of a Lakewood police officer and left three other officers wounded. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, where officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual attempting to board a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus.
According to Lakewood Police Public Information Officer John Romero, officers encountered the suspect as he tried to get on the bus. The suspect immediately opened fire, striking four officers. “We are very sorry to report that one of those agents has been pronounced dead of their injuries,” Romero said at a press conference.
The suspect was shot by responding officers and was pronounced dead at the scene. A civilian who was nearby was also injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Details about the civilian’s condition and the extent of the officers’ injuries have not been released.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis issued a statement expressing his sorrow for the fallen officer and his family. “Law enforcement put their lives on the line for our safety every day and I am heartbroken to learn that a Lakewood Police Agent was killed in the line of duty this evening,” Polis wrote. He also extended thoughts to the three injured officers and the civilian victim, wishing them a swift recovery.
The Colorado State Patrol arrived to assist at the scene, and the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation, with support from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
