Dove + Deer Fills a Gap Albany Didn’t Know It Had

On a weeknight around 6:30, the front tables at Dove + Deer on Delaware Avenue are starting to fill up — the kind of steady, quiet buzz that tells you regulars have already figured out the parking situation and staked their claims. I got there just early enough to snag a spot near the window, which is where you want to be if you’re eating alone and don’t mind watching the neighborhood move past.

Dove + Deer sits in the Delaware Avenue corridor, south of downtown Albany in the kind of stretch that’s genuinely residential — not a destination block yet, but getting there. The restaurant is small: maybe fifteen tables, warm lighting, exposed brick doing some heavy lifting on the aesthetic side without feeling forced. It’s a wine bar in the sense that the wine list is thoughtful and the staff actually knows what’s on it, but calling it just a wine bar undersells the food.

The menu changes with some regularity, which is both the charm and the minor inconvenience if you go back for a specific thing and it’s gone. What stays consistent is the approach: small plates, local sourcing where they can swing it, and a European-leaning sensibility that’s more bistro than fussy. I’ve been there four times now and ordered differently each visit. The burrata, when it’s on the menu, is worth ordering even if you think you’re tired of burrata. They do something with stone fruit or pickled something — it shifts by season — that makes the dish feel considered rather than automatic.

The charcuterie board is a reliable entry point, well-assembled and priced around $22-$26 depending on what’s on it. Portions are genuinely sized for sharing two or three plates between two people, so budget accordingly — a full meal for two with a couple glasses of wine lands somewhere between $80 and $110 before tip. That’s not cheap, but it’s not pretending to be cheap either, and the quality justifies it.

Wine by the glass runs $12-$17, and I’d recommend just asking what they’re excited about rather than parsing the list yourself. Both times I’ve done that, I ended up with something I wouldn’t have found on my own — a skin-contact white one time, a low-intervention Spanish red another. The staff isn’t precious about it; they talk about wine like people who drink it, not people who want credit for knowing about it.

If you’re going on a Friday or Saturday, make a reservation. They do take walk-ins when there’s room, but the room fills up faster than the size of the place would suggest. Weeknight visits are more relaxed, and the kitchen seems less rushed — I’ve had marginally better experiences mid-week, timing-wise.

Dove + Deer isn’t trying to be Albany’s big exciting new thing. It’s just doing a specific kind of neighborhood restaurant well — the kind where you can linger over a second glass of wine without feeling like they need the table back. Albany has a few more of these than it used to, which is a good sign. This one earns its place on the list.
