Virginia Man Faces Sentencing in Double Murder Plot Involving Au Pair

In Fairfax, Virginia, Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, is scheduled to be sentenced for his role in a double murder scheme that shocked the local community. Banfield was found guilty of murdering his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan, a man lured to their home under false pretenses.

The case, which has drawn significant attention, involved Banfield’s affair with the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães. Prosecutors revealed that Banfield and Magalhães conspired to eliminate Christine Banfield, a pediatric intensive care nurse, to pursue a future together. Magalhães testified that Banfield wanted to avoid divorce to retain financial control and custody of their 4-year-old daughter.

On February 24, 2023, the tragic events unfolded when Ryan was lured to the Banfield residence in Herndon, Virginia, under the guise of a sexual encounter orchestrated by Banfield and Magalhães. The plan was to stage the scene to appear as if Ryan was a violent intruder. Magalhães, who was outside with the Banfields’ child, called Banfield when Ryan arrived. Banfield then shot Ryan and fatally stabbed his wife.

Magalhães, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in exchange for her testimony against Banfield, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Her testimony was pivotal in revealing the premeditated nature of the crime, including the impersonation of Christine Banfield on a fetish website to lure Ryan.

Banfield now faces the possibility of life in prison, having been convicted of murder and child endangerment due to the presence of his young daughter during the killings. The case underscores the tragic consequences of betrayal and manipulation within a family setting.
