WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital announced the launch of a new cancer support group that will meet each month in the hospital’s Community Room. The group is designed to give individuals and families in Fayette County a local, welcoming space to share experiences, receive encouragement, and find practical resources during the cancer journey.
Details of the program
Meetings are scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month. The group is open to anyone whose life has been touched by cancer – patients currently undergoing treatment, survivors, those in remission, caregivers, and family members. Participation is completely free of charge.
Facilitators and leadership
The support group will be facilitated by three experienced staff members: Vicki Montgomery of the palliative care team, Melissa Visger, supervisor of care management, and Stacey Pocius, director of care management and social work. Each brings a background in compassionate care and patient advocacy.
“Together, we offer strength during difficult moments, celebrate victories both large and small, and remind one another that there is always hope, support, and someone who cares,” Visger said.
Montgomery added, “Our support group will make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of our community members.”
Hospital’s broader commitment
Karyn Wallace, president and CEO of Uniontown Hospital, emphasized that the initiative reflects the hospital’s dedication to caring for the whole person. “While clinical care is essential, support systems are equally important for patients and families facing a cancer diagnosis. We are grateful to our Patient and Family Advisory Council and the team members who worked to make this resource available to our community,” she said.
The hospital hopes the program will become a sustainable, easily accessible resource for residents throughout Fayette County and the surrounding region as it evolves.
How to join
While walk‑ins are welcome, participants are encouraged to register in advance. Registrations can be made by emailing [email protected] or calling 724‑430‑5361. Additional information is available on the hospital’s website at WVUMedicine.org/Uniontown.
Why this matters locally
Access to emotional and social support is a critical component of comprehensive cancer care. By offering a free, locally based group, Uniontown Hospital helps reduce the isolation many patients and families feel, reinforcing the hospital’s role as a cornerstone of health and community well‑being in Fayette County.
Community members are invited to attend, share their stories, and build lasting connections with others who understand the challenges of cancer. The hospital expects the group to grow as word spreads, further strengthening the network of care that extends beyond medical treatment.
