Kenneth Ho appointed executive director of Denver Urban Renewal Authority

Denver’s Urban Renewal Authority (DURA) announced Thursday that Kenneth Ho, a well‑known developer in the metro area, has been appointed its new executive director. The board approved the appointment and Ho is set to assume the role on Dec. 1, taking over from Tracy Huggins, who retired after 25 years of service, and interim director Bill Pruter.

Experience and community focus

In an interview with Denverite, Ho said he approaches the position with “curiosity and humility,” acknowledging the strong foundation left by Huggins. “I’m having to step into some pretty big shoes,” he added, noting the responsibility of guiding DURA’s mission to revitalize blighted neighborhoods.

Ho’s résumé includes serving as chief operating officer of the Fitzsimons Innovation Community, a large‑scale life‑science campus north of the CU Anschutz medical campus. In that role he oversaw real‑estate development, infrastructure planning, and coordinated closely with the Aurora Urban Renewal Authority. Earlier, Ho led the unsuccessful proposal to build mixed‑use housing, retail and open space at the Park Hill Golf Course, a plan that was rejected by voters.

DURA’s role in Denver

DURA is a quasi‑governmental agency tasked with breathing new life into areas the authority deems blighted. While it operates independently of the municipal government, it frequently partners with the city on planning, demolition, and funding of redevelopment projects. Current DURA initiatives include several mixed‑use and affordable‑housing projects, streetscape improvements, and the renovation of historic structures.

Looking ahead

Ho said the biggest challenges will be navigating “complicated neighborhood dynamics” and ensuring development aligns with community needs. “There are a lot of challenges out there in the community and especially in terms of how development can or can’t work here in the city,” he explained. “I just look forward to being part of those conversations and part of the next big thing in Denver.”

Local stakeholders have expressed optimism that Ho’s blend of private‑sector experience and community outreach will help DURA balance growth with the values of Denver’s families and faith‑based neighborhoods. The authority’s upcoming projects are expected to create jobs, increase housing options, and enhance public spaces, all while respecting the city’s traditional family‑centered character.

As the new director, Ho will report to the DURA board and work closely with city officials, neighborhood associations, and private developers to advance the authority’s renewal agenda. His appointment marks a new chapter for an agency that has long been a key player in Denver’s urban development landscape.
