NC State police execute search warrants at Sigma Nu fraternity amid hazing allegations

Police from North Carolina State University executed six search warrants in late October, targeting the Sigma Nu fraternity house and four members’ personal devices. The warrants were based on a series of anonymous tips received in mid‑September that described extreme hazing practices, threats of violence and illegal drug activity.

Anonymous tips detail disturbing hazing practices

The tips, filed around Sept. 14 and Sept. 22, alleged that pledges were forced to consume each other’s vomit, cigarettes, dip, expired milk and large quantities of alcohol, including “handles of vodka” and a full keg of beer. Additional reports claimed that several pledges were hospitalized after the hazing, and that they faced death threats if they attempted to leave the fraternity or seek help.

One tip further asserted that current members were “high on cocaine” and that the fraternity’s “pledge master” was using crack cocaine while overseeing the hazing. The warrants state that at least five pledges required medical attention due to injuries sustained during the alleged incidents.

Searches yield phones, computers and illegal substances

During the Oct. 30 search of the fraternity house, officers seized a cooler and a variety of items, including 13 cellphones, two laptops, two iPads, containers of Schedule II pills and a plastic container of marijuana. University network connectivity logs from the house were also collected as part of the investigation.

University and district attorney respond

NC State University confirmed that the fraternity is under an interim suspension and a criminal investigation. A university spokesperson said, “NC State does not tolerate hazing. The safety and well‑being of our students is of the utmost importance,” and declined to comment further as the case proceeds.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman told WRAL News she expects criminal charges to be filed as the investigation continues.

Community impact and next steps

The allegations have raised serious concerns among students, parents and local residents about campus safety and the culture of Greek life. While a national representative for Sigma Nu has not responded to requests for comment, the fraternity’s interim suspension signals a firm stance against hazing.

University officials have urged anyone with additional information to contact campus police. The ongoing investigation underscores the importance of protecting students from abusive practices and upholding the rule of law on campus.
