Austin City Council races: incumbents hold seats, several runoffs set for Dec. 12

Early voting tallies released on Nov. 3 indicate mixed outcomes across Austin’s five City Council contests. Incumbents Zo Qadri in District 9 and Selena Xie in District 8 are poised for outright wins, while Districts 1, 3 and 5 appear headed for runoff elections on Dec. 12.

District 9 – Zo Qadri avoids runoff

In Central Austin’s District 9, incumbent council member Zo Qadri secured just over 51% of the vote in a five‑candidate field, clearing the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff. Qadri thanked voters, emphasizing his commitment to affordable housing, renters and working families. “Four years ago, we ran on the belief that Austin should be a city where everyone can afford to live, work, and build a future,” he said. “Tonight, voters gave us another four years to keep fighting for that vision.”

District 8 – Selena Xie wins decisively

Southwest Austin’s District 8 saw a two‑person race in which Selena Xie captured nearly 65% of the vote, defeating Jeffery Bowen. Xie pledged to begin work immediately on wildfire preparedness, long‑range water planning and public‑safety services. Bowen attributed his loss to opposition from outside groups he claimed did not represent district interests.

District 1 – Potential runoff between Goodwin and Ramos

East Austin’s open District 1 featured six candidates. Amber K. Goodwin leads with just over 36% of the vote, closely followed by Misael Ramos at just over 35%, a margin of 73 votes. Both candidates highlighted their grassroots, donor‑free campaigns. Goodwin has not responded to comment requests; Ramos said his “people‑powered movement” will continue into a possible runoff.

District 3 – José Velásquez may face runoff

Incumbent José Velásquez earned roughly 47% of the early vote, falling short of the 50% needed for an outright win. Challenger Neha Shah captured about 25%, setting the stage for a potential December runoff if the incumbent does not cross the threshold.

District 5 – Ryan Alter likely headed to runoff

In South Austin’s District 5, incumbent Ryan Alter secured nearly 48% of the vote, while challenger David Weinberg earned roughly 26.5%. Alter, who previously won his seat in a 2022 runoff, expressed confidence in a potential second‑round contest, noting his strong precinct performance.

What’s next

Runoff elections will be held on Dec. 12 if any of the three districts fail to produce a majority winner. All results remain unofficial until canvassed. Voters can track their district’s progress on the City of Austin’s election website.
