Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand is looking forward to returning to action after a left‑knee injury that sidelined him in early October. The 38‑year‑old said the injury “could have been so much worse” and expressed relief that doctors expect a recovery period of a few months.
Recovery timeline
Marchand told reporters Thursday that he began on‑ice rehab within weeks of the injury and hopes to be game‑ready in the next six weeks, possibly even sooner. “I’ve never been so happy to be out for this amount of time,” he said. “It’s been getting better every day and getting stronger and we’re working through it.”
How the injury happened
During a game in Los Angeles, Marchand was struck by a high stick late in the second period and crashed into the goal post, bending his left knee at an awkward angle. He required assistance from teammates to leave the ice and was unable to bear weight on the leg.
Captain Aleksander Barkov also on the mend
Captain Aleksander Barkov, who missed the entire 2024‑25 season with a knee injury, is also nearing a return. Barkov and Marchand have been training together, and Barkov praised Marchand’s dedication, saying, “It’s been great to share the experience with Marchy and just to see him on a daily basis, what he does, how he gets ready and just everything, like getting to know him a little more.”
Future outlook
Marchand, who was traded to Florida in March 2025 after 16 seasons with the Boston Bruins, helped the Panthers capture their second straight Stanley Cup that year. He remains under contract for four more seasons and believes his rehab work will allow him to dictate his own timeline, rather than letting injury dictate his career.
“When you win, that’s what drives you. I want to win,” Marchand said. “The older I get, I realize how little time I have left, and you want to make the most of it.”
New team plane unveiled
Thursday also saw the unveiling of a newly painted Airbus A320, dubbed “Go Cats Go,” honoring the two‑time Stanley Cup champions. Marchand, Barkov and Panthers hockey operations president Bill Zito signed the aircraft before its inaugural flight to Boston, Marchand’s former home.
