Midland County lifts burn ban after recent rain eases fire risk

Midland County, Texas – County officials lifted the countywide burn ban effective immediately after a spell of rain improved moisture levels across the region. The ban, which had been in place since October 1 due to dry conditions and heightened wildfire concerns, is now suspended.

Rainfall eases fire danger

According to the Midland County Fire Marshal’s Office, the recent precipitation has raised ground moisture and reduced the likelihood of rapid fire spread. “The rain has given us a much safer environment for controlled outdoor burning,” said Fire Marshal John Hernandez. “We will continue to monitor conditions, but for now the ban can be lifted.”

Guidelines for safe burning

While the ban is lifted, officials stress that residents must still exercise caution. Outdoor burning is permitted only in areas where local ordinances allow it, and burners should keep a fire extinguisher or water source nearby. The county recommends the following safety steps:

  • Check the weather forecast for any wind shifts or dry spells.
  • Clear flammable debris from the burn area.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the site.

Violations of fire‑safety regulations can result in fines or other penalties, even though the ban itself is no longer in effect.

Community response

Local residents expressed relief at the news, noting that many had been waiting to clear yard waste and debris. “We’ve been sitting on a pile of branches for months,” said longtime Midland County homeowner Maria Gonzalez. “It’s good to finally be able to burn safely without worrying about a countywide ban.”

However, some neighbors urged continued vigilance, especially as the weather can change quickly in West Texas. “We appreciate the lift, but we must stay responsible,” added rancher Tom Baker, who frequently uses prescribed burns to manage pasture health.

What’s next?

The county will continue to track moisture levels and fire‑danger ratings. If conditions deteriorate, officials reserve the right to reinstate the ban with appropriate notice. Residents can stay informed through the Midland County website, local radio stations, and the county’s social‑media channels.
