Milwaukee’s We Black We Golf Welcomes New Golfers to the Course

In Milwaukee, the organization We Black We Golf is making strides to ensure that golf is accessible to everyone, particularly focusing on Black children and adults. Founded after an incident where one of its founders was stared at on the golf course, the group aims to change perceptions and make the sport more inclusive.

Breaking Barriers in Golf

Richard Badger, the director and golf mentor of We Black We Golf, emphasizes that golf should not be seen as a game of exclusivity. The organization hosts clinics and community outings to introduce Black individuals to the sport in a supportive environment. Participants learn the basics, such as holding and swinging a golf club, before deciding if they want to pursue the sport further.

The organization also assists newcomers in finding affordable golf clubs, as many beginners purchase the wrong equipment. While the majority of members are over 45, there is a concerted effort to attract younger players, particularly Black women, who are the fastest-growing demographic in recreational golf.

Opportunities for Youth

Badger highlights the importance of exposing young people to golf, noting that many Black children are not introduced to the sport because their families do not play or watch it. He stresses the potential for scholarships, with millions of dollars in golf scholarships going unclaimed due to a lack of minority applicants.

One success story is Chandler Tribble, who became involved with We Black We Golf through his mother, Ti-mara Minefee-Tribble. Chandler quickly developed a passion for the sport, joining his school’s golf team and participating in various golf-related activities.

Golf as a Networking Tool

Beyond recreation, Badger sees golf as a valuable networking tool. He describes it as a space where individuals can build relationships and gain opportunities that might be harder to achieve in traditional office settings. We Black We Golf has even partnered with community activists to host networking events that combine golf with business discussions.

We Black We Golf continues to host clinics throughout the year, offering free sessions for children and affordable options for adults. These efforts are part of a broader mission to make golf a welcoming and inclusive sport for all.
