Indiana carries out first of three executions scheduled nationwide on Thursday

Indiana’s Department of Correction carried out the execution of Jeffrey Weisheit just after midnight on Thursday, making it the first of three lethal injections scheduled for the same day nationwide. Weisheit, 50, was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. at the state prison in Michigan City after a lethal injection that began shortly after midnight.

Noelle Russell, the department’s chief communications officer, confirmed that Weisheit’s final meal was barbecue ribs and that he offered no final statement. The execution fulfills a court‑ordered sentence for the 2010 arson that killed his girlfriend’s two children, ages 8 and 5, in the Evansville area.

Governor’s response and legal background

Indiana Republican Governor Mike Braun declined requests from Weisheit’s attorneys to conduct brain scans or to reduce the sentence to life imprisonment. Braun issued a brief statement noting that the case had been reviewed multiple times by state and federal courts and that “these reviews have never resulted in an overturned sentence.” He added that the sentence was carried out as ordered by the court.

Attorney General Todd Rokita praised the execution, saying it delivered “long‑awaited justice for Alyssa Lynch and her brother Caleb, two innocent children whose lives were stolen in an act of unspeakable cruelty.” The administration emphasized confidence in the state’s ability to carry out the execution humanely, despite recent scrutiny of lethal‑injection drugs.

Drug procurement controversy

Weisheit’s legal team raised concerns about Indiana’s use of lethal drugs purchased from a pharmacy currently facing a disciplinary hearing before the Indiana Pharmacy Board. The Department of Correction maintained that the drugs meet safety standards and that the execution will be performed in accordance with established protocols.

Executions in Florida and Alabama

Later Thursday, Florida and Alabama will each carry out an execution, marking the second time this year that three people are put to death on the same day. Florida’s execution will be its 19th this year under Governor Ron DeSantis, tying the state’s record set in 2025. The inmate, Jesse Guardado, was convicted of fatally stabbing a 75‑year‑old woman in 2004 and stealing her valuables.

Alabama’s execution will involve Michael Taylor, 54, who was sentenced for the 1989 beating death of an older couple during a robbery. Governor Kay Ivey declined a request to commute his sentence to life imprisonment, despite opposition from death‑penalty advocates who cited Taylor’s age at the time of the crime.

National context

The death penalty continues to face renewed scrutiny after the failed execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee, where she survived two lethal doses of pentobarbital. Courts have since rejected further attempts to halt executions, but the controversy over drug protocols and moral considerations persists.

These three executions underscore the ongoing commitment of Republican governors in Indiana, Florida, and Alabama to enforce capital punishment sentences handed down by the courts, while also highlighting the legal and ethical debates that surround the practice.
