Logan Square’s longtime neighborhood haunt, The Walk In, is set to welcome patrons again after more than a year of renovation. The cocktail bar, located at 2727 N. Milwaukee Ave., will open its doors Friday night, but guests will first step through an unexpected portal – the walk‑in cooler of Red Star Liquor and Deli next door at 2725 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Speakeasy‑style entrance
Owner Esam Hani explained that the cooler entrance creates a “special experience for a speakeasy,” echoing the bar’s original name, which was inspired by the cooler that once occupied the space. While the original front door on Milwaukee Avenue remains intact, it will stay closed until at least next spring.
Supporting local businesses
Hani, who also runs Red Star Liquor and several nearby eateries under his One of a Kind Hospitality group, said the new entry point benefits both establishments. “It’s also a way to support the deli and liquor store. People can get snacks and sandwiches,” he noted.
Soft opening and upcoming grand reopening
The soft opening will feature DJ Billa on Friday, followed by DJ KOZ on Saturday, according to an Instagram announcement. A larger grand reopening event is scheduled for November 14, promising a broader celebration of the bar’s refreshed look.
Renovation highlights
The remodel introduced new bathroom tile, a fresh back bar, updated paint, and new paneling. Interior design elements now include vintage pop‑art, exposed brick, brass railings, and artwork by local artist Jeanette Margaret. The cocktail menu has expanded to offer more drinks, including a wider selection of spirits, draft, and canned beers.
Operating hours
For the soft opening, The Walk In will be open from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday. After the November 14 grand reopening, regular hours will shift to 4 p.m.‑2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 p.m.‑midnight Sunday through Thursday.
Future plans
Hani originally hoped to reopen the bar last year but postponed to allow time for other nearby projects and to let the space “breathe.” A new team was hired last month to help manage the refreshed venue.
The Walk In’s return adds another vibrant option to Logan Square’s growing nightlife scene, offering residents and visitors a blend of classic cocktail culture and modern design, all while reinforcing the neighborhood’s tradition of supporting local entrepreneurs.
