Austin voters back $260 million parks bond and $35 million library bond

Early voting and initial Election Day tallies indicate that Austin’s two 2026 bond propositions are on track for approval, according to Community Impact. Proposition A proposes a $260 million investment in parks, while Proposition B seeks $35 million for library projects, and both measures earned about 60% support citywide.

Proposition A received more than 62.5% of early votes in favor, and Proposition B secured 62% approval. The measures were broadly favored in Travis County, which encompasses most of Austin, while Williamson County showed narrower margins of only a few hundred votes. In Hays County, home to a smaller share of Austin voters, the parks bond was opposed by a 41‑vote margin and the library bond by a 10‑vote margin.

Mayor Kirk Watson said the results reflect residents’ desire for local improvements despite concerns about affordability. “The lesson we can and should take from the voters is that we can be an ambitious city and a disciplined city,” Watson said in a statement. Ted Siff, treasurer for the pro‑bond Parks, Pools, Trails & Books campaign, echoed the sentiment, calling the outcome an “important victory” that shows Austinites trust a “prudent and deliberate council” to fund parks and libraries.

The new debt is expected to raise the typical homeowner’s tax bill by more than $40 by the early 2030s. The city projects the bonds will cost about $11 per $100,000 of property value each year once fully issued, with tax impacts beginning in 2027 and increasing gradually. Based on the 2024 median home value of $377,282, the average homeowner would see an additional charge of just under $7 next year, rising to roughly $41.60 when all bonds are in place. The city plans to issue about $49 million of debt annually over six years.

These are the first bond measures to include parks and library funding since 2018, following a 2022 $350 million affordable‑housing proposition. If approved, the parks bond will fund a range of improvements and land acquisitions across the city, while the library bond will finance new branches in Southwest and far‑East Austin. Voters will receive the final, official results after canvassing, and the city will begin implementing the projects and tax adjustments in the coming years.
