Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh hosts annual Mister Rogers Sweater Drive

The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is once again opening its doors to the community for the annual Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive, which runs through the end of November. Visitors who bring a new or gently‑used sweater of any size to the donation bin at the museum’s main entrance will receive a complimentary adult admission ticket for that same day.

How to donate

Donations are accepted every day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The museum’s public hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving families ample time to stop by, drop off a sweater, and enjoy the exhibits. While all sizes are welcome, children’s sweaters are especially needed, and the museum encourages families to bring items that are clean and in good condition.

Impact of the drive

For the past 26 years, the sweater drive has gathered roughly 50,000 sweaters, providing warmth and comfort to children and families across the Pittsburgh area during the holiday season. Jane Werner, the museum’s executive director, said, “Each year we are overwhelmed with the generosity of the Pittsburgh community, who come together to donate thousands of sweaters to those in need. We are proud to distribute not just sweaters, but a feeling of joy and warmth during the holiday season.”

Why it matters

The initiative reflects the museum’s broader mission to serve as a gathering place for families, fostering learning, creativity, and compassion. By turning a beloved television program into a tangible act of service, the drive reinforces the values of kindness and community that Mister Rogers championed.

More information

Those interested in learning more about the sweater drive, including details on drop‑off locations and volunteer opportunities, can visit the museum’s dedicated page at pittsburghkids.org/sweaterdrive/. The museum also encourages anyone who cannot donate a sweater to consider a monetary contribution, which helps cover the costs of sorting, cleaning, and distributing the garments.

The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh invites all residents to participate, reminding everyone that a simple act of giving can bring warmth to a neighbor in need and keep the spirit of Mister Rogers alive in the community.
