Washington County residents will see a new chief executive officer in early January when Dana Deree is sworn in as county judge. The former senior U.S. diplomat, military veteran and local entrepreneur was elected on Tuesday, defeating Democratic nominee Tim Shepard.
Responsibility and Vision
“I feel an immense sense of responsibility,” Deree told reporters at his Fayetteville home less than 24 hours after the election. “This is a big job and I’m going into it with eyes wide open, and I’m determined to do it well.” He emphasized that the county judge role is the only public office that aligns with his background in executive leadership.
Executive Experience Guides the Plan
Deree highlighted his experience as a senior diplomat and as the founder‑CEO of a Washington County‑based company. “It is an executive position and that’s what my experience and background are in,” he said. He expects to bring that same strategic mindset to the county’s day‑to‑day operations.
Infrastructure and Public‑Safety Challenges
Addressing the county’s most pressing issues, Deree warned that Washington County is navigating “tough economic times” while experiencing rapid growth. He noted that the existing infrastructure is strained and that overcrowded facilities are creating safety concerns and driving up costs for taxpayers.
“We have an overcrowded system that causes problems for individuals, for public safety, and is extremely expensive for the county,” he explained. Deree said his first priority will be to assess the county’s road network, water and sewer systems, and to develop a long‑term capital improvement plan that balances growth with fiscal responsibility.
Building an Effective Executive Team
Recognizing the importance of a capable staff, Deree said he will begin hiring an executive team as soon as he takes office. He also plans to meet individually with all elected officials in Washington County to foster collaboration and ensure that every department works toward shared goals.
“I want to get to know all of the elected leaders better, so that everyone works well together,” he added.
Looking Ahead
While the inauguration is still two months away, Deree is already mapping out his agenda. He promised regular updates to the community and an open‑door policy for residents who wish to share concerns or ideas.
With a focus on responsible growth, infrastructure renewal, and effective governance, the new judge‑elect aims to steer Washington County toward a prosperous and secure future.
