Saturday Soup Dumplings at Lao Sze Chuan in Aurora

Nobody drives to the Fox Valley for Sichuan food. That’s the assumption, anyway. And then someone drags you to Lao Sze Chuan on the edge of Aurora’s north side, and you spend the rest of the year quietly recommending it to people while pretending you’ve known about it forever.

The restaurant sits in a strip mall on Algonquin Road — the kind of plaza where you’re sharing a parking lot with a nail salon and a mattress store. This tells you nothing about what’s inside. The room is tidy and dim enough to feel like a dinner out rather than a quick errand, with round tables suited for the kind of meal that sprawls across two hours and several rounds of tea refills. The staff moves efficiently and doesn’t hover, which is exactly the right speed for a place where you’re going to need time to read the menu.

The menu is long. Bring patience, or just admit early that you’ll need to come back. Tony Hu’s Chicago flagship on Michigan Avenue made the name; this Fox Valley outpost runs the same kitchen playbook. The mala — that numbing, oily, floral heat from Sichuan peppercorns and dried chilies — shows up reliably in the right dishes without being deployed as a stunt.

The soup dumplings are the obvious starting point, and they hold up: thin skins, enough broth inside to actually matter, pork filling that tastes seasoned rather than bland. Don’t rush them. The dan dan noodles arrive in a shallow bowl with a dark, sesame-heavy sauce that coats the noodles properly without pooling into a puddle at the bottom. Order those. Order also the dry-fried green beans, which come blistered and salty and slightly addictive in a way that makes you eat four more than you planned.

If you want to push further into the menu, the mala beef hot pot is a serious undertaking — a clay pot of numbing red broth, tender sliced beef, and enough spice to make the table quiet for a few minutes. It’s the kind of dish that makes the rest of the week’s lunches feel like an afterthought. Fair warning: they’re not adjusting the heat level much for the timid. This isn’t a mild version of the cuisine dressed up for suburban comfort.

Dinner for two with appetizers, two entrees, and tea will generally run $45–$65 before tip, depending on how deep you go into the menu. Lunch is a bit lighter on the wallet. Weekends get busy enough that a short wait is realistic if you show up without a reservation; calling ahead is smarter than it sounds.

What makes the Aurora location worth the trip over just catching the Chicago original isn’t the novelty of a suburban outpost — it’s the parking, the quieter dining room, and the fact that you can actually have a conversation at the table. The food is the same. The experience is marginally less chaotic. For anyone out this way who keeps driving past it on the way to somewhere else, the drive-past streak should probably end soon.
