Robards, Ky. – A clear majority of Robards voters supported a measure to permit alcohol sales inside the city limits during Tuesday’s Henderson County general election. The ballot measure passed with 337 votes in favor and 132 against, signaling strong community backing for expanding local retail options.
Local businesses stand to benefit
The approval means that establishments such as the Robards General Store can now apply for a liquor license. Store owner Joe McGarrh said the change will not only generate an additional revenue stream but also give residents a convenient, safe place to purchase beer and other alcoholic beverages without traveling 15 to 20 minutes to neighboring towns.
“Well, obviously it’s going to help business. I think it’s going to provide an additional stream of revenue, but more importantly it’s going to give locals here another option to purchase beer and alcohol. So rather than have to drive 15 or 20 minutes in either direction to go get it, now they have a place that they can walk to that is safe and convenient nearby,” McGarrh explained.
Licensing timeline
McGarrh indicated that the store hopes to have its liquor license approved by the end of the year, which would allow it to begin selling alcohol shortly thereafter. The licensing process will involve standard state and local reviews to ensure compliance with Kentucky’s alcohol regulations.
Community impact
Residents who voted for the measure expressed optimism that the new option will keep spending within Robards, supporting local jobs and tax revenue. Opponents of the measure, while in the minority, raised typical concerns about increased traffic and the need for responsible sales practices.
City officials have not yet announced a specific date for when the General Store can start selling alcohol, but they emphasized that the measure reflects the will of the community and aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the local economy.
Looking ahead
The vote adds to a series of recent local decisions that shape daily life in Henderson County, from infrastructure projects to public‑safety initiatives. As Robards continues to grow, the ability to offer a wider range of goods locally is seen as a step toward greater self‑sufficiency and convenience for families and individuals alike.
