Man Extradited from Mexico for 2024 Boyle Heights Freeway Shooting

In a significant development, Christian Rojas, a 21-year-old from Bellflower, has been extradited from Mexico to the United States to face charges related to a deadly freeway shooting in Boyle Heights. The incident, which occurred on October 10, 2024, on the 5 Freeway near Lorena Avenue, resulted in the death of 29-year-old Encarnacion Escobedo and left another individual injured.

Extradition and Arrest

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) identified Christian Rojas and his father, 47-year-old Joshua Rojas Sr. of Downey, as suspects in the shooting. While Joshua Rojas Sr. was apprehended in San Bernardino shortly after the incident and remains in custody awaiting trial, Christian Rojas evaded capture by fleeing to Mexico.

Authorities issued a $4.3 million bail warrant for Christian Rojas, and the U.S. Marshals Service, in collaboration with Mexican state police, successfully located and arrested him in Palomo de Arriba, Mexico. He was subsequently extradited to the U.S. and booked into jail on the outstanding warrant.

Community Impact

The extradition of Christian Rojas marks a crucial step in addressing the violent crime that disrupted the Boyle Heights community nearly two years ago. The incident underscores the importance of cross-border cooperation in bringing fugitives to justice and ensuring public safety.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains focused on healing and moving forward, while authorities work diligently to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families.
