Notre Dame prepares to battle Miami’s dominant line in key rivalry showdown

South Bend, IN – Notre Dame’s football staff is zeroing in on the battle in the trenches as the Fighting Irish host No. 1 Miami this Saturday. Coach Marcus Freeman says the Hurricanes’ defense defines their identity and will test the Irish’s offensive line from the first snap.

Defensive tape and familiar faces

Freeman noted several Miami defenders that remind him of past draft picks, including defensive ends Armondo Blount, Rueben Bain Jr., and Akheem Mesidor, as well as dynamic pass‑rushers Marquise Lightfoot and Damon Wilson Jr. He also recalled the challenge of opening holes against interior tackles Ahmad Moton Sr. and Justin Scott in the 2025 season‑opener.

Line play could decide the game

Notre Dame’s offensive line has allowed just two sacks while quarterback C.J. Carr has thrown 222 passes this season. Miami’s defensive front, meanwhile, leads the FBS with the fewest rushing yards allowed per game at 69.8. Both units are key to their teams’ unbeaten runs – Miami (8‑0, 6‑0 ACC, No. 1 CFP) and Notre Dame (7‑1, No. 11 CFP) are both vying for another national title.

Miami defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman praised the Irish line, noting Carr has been protected well, taking only one or two sacks all year and posting 18 touchdowns to one interception. The question remains whether Notre Dame can sustain that protection against a relentless Miami rush.

Key players step up

Lightfoot, a force on the Canes’ edge, forced a crucial second‑half fumble against North Carolina and has recorded seven sacks and 31 quarterback pressures this season. Moten and Scott have anchored Miami’s interior line all year, presenting a formidable obstacle for the Irish.

Notre Dame’s starting guard Anthonie Knapp, who shifted from tackle after 27 starts, relishes the challenge. “You can’t take your foot off the gas,” he said, emphasizing the need for constant effort against Miami’s seasoned linemen.

Irish strategy

Freeman says the Irish aim to establish a strong ground game on early downs while keeping Carr protected in the passing attack. The team’s motto this season – “leave no doubt” – reflects their focus on disciplined, hard‑working play.

After a loss to BYU in October and a narrow defeat to Miami in the 2025 opener, Notre Dame views this matchup as its biggest test yet. The Irish hope to honor late coach Lou Holtz by executing their formula for success and proving they belong among the nation’s elite.
