Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is strengthening its aviation program with the soft‑opening of a brand‑new flight‑training center in Maple, Currituck County. The facility marks the university’s third training location in northeastern North Carolina, joining the main campus in Elizabeth City and a satellite site in Kinston.
Local investment and modern equipment
Ground was broken on the project in March 2025, and construction has transformed the site into a fully equipped training hub. The center houses two Federal Aviation Administration‑approved Aviation Advanced Training Devices built by Redbird, allowing students to practice flight procedures when weather prevents actual flying. In addition, the complex includes a heated and air‑conditioned hangar for aircraft storage and a separate storage hangar.
Student access and future growth
During the current semester, the center is soft‑opening with one aircraft available for student use. “We’re working to get some additional aircraft as well to bolster the fleet so that we can further support this location,” said Nicholas Lenczycki, interim department chair of Aviation Science. Students will be able to choose whether to train at the new Currituck site or at the primary Elizabeth City location, giving them flexibility and more flight‑hour opportunities.
Pathways to airline careers
ECSU’s aviation students benefit from several airline partnership programs, including United Aviate, Delta Propel, PSA Airlines Cadet, Republic PJet Cadet and JetBlue Pilot Gateway. These pipelines help students move from flight training to instructor roles and ultimately to positions with major carriers. “When students come to Elizabeth City, they have an opportunity to just go from being a student to being an instructor to being eligible for application to one of our great partner programs,” Lenczycki explained.
Long‑term expansion plans
The university also plans to open a new on‑campus aviation facility by mid‑2027, further expanding resources for aspiring pilots and aviation professionals. The continued growth of ECSU’s program is expected to create additional jobs and attract more students to the region, supporting the local economy and reinforcing North Carolina’s reputation as a hub for aviation training.
