The Pit Keeps Old-School Whole Hog Alive Downtown

The Pit has been serving whole-hog Eastern Carolina barbecue in downtown Raleigh since 2007, and it remains one of the few places in the city where you can eat the real thing without driving an hour east on 70.

I’ll start with the most important reason I keep going back: the pork. The Pit cooks whole hogs over wood coals — oak and hickory — low and slow, the way families in Wilson and Goldsboro and Ayden have been doing it for generations. The result is smoky, finely chopped pork with a little vinegar tang and enough fat left in to keep it honest. It’s not the prettiest plate you’ll see in Raleigh, but it doesn’t need to be. When you order the chopped pork here, you’re getting something with actual lineage, not a barbecue-adjacent approximation.

Second reason: the building itself earns its keep. The restaurant sits in a converted 1930s meatpacking plant on Davie Street, with high ceilings, exposed brick, and old butcher equipment worked into the decor in a way that actually makes sense rather than feeling staged. It’s loud on a weekend night, comfortable on a Tuesday. I tend to go for lunch on weekdays when the crowd is lighter and the service has room to breathe.

Third reason, and this one matters if you’re going with people who don’t eat pork or just want variety: the supporting cast is solid. The fried chicken is properly done — not an afterthought. The sides hold up: collard greens cooked down the right way, mac and cheese that leans creamy without getting gluey, hush puppies that arrive hot. The Brunswick stew is thick and savory and tastes like someone’s grandmother cared about it. Order two or three sides and you’ve got a full meal worth having.

Prices land somewhere in the mid-range for Raleigh dining — a plate with two sides runs around $16 to $20, which feels fair for what you’re getting and where you’re sitting. They also have a solid bourbon and whiskey list if you’re staying past dinner, and the cocktail program is more thoughtful than you’d necessarily expect from a barbecue joint.

A few practical notes: parking on Davie Street is tight, but there’s a deck nearby and street parking opens up after the lunch rush clears. They take reservations, which I’d recommend for Friday and Saturday nights. The patio out front is worth requesting in spring and fall when the weather cooperates.

The Pit isn’t the loudest or flashiest option on a Raleigh dining map that keeps adding new names. But it’s doing something specific and doing it well: keeping a food tradition alive and accessible in a city that could easily lose it to trendier things. If you grew up eating Eastern Carolina barbecue, you’ll feel the familiarity. If you didn’t, this is a reasonable place to start understanding why it matters.
