8th Street Bridge Repairs Completed, Traffic Restored in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs residents saw a long‑awaited improvement this week when the final phase of work on the 8th Street bridge over Fountain Creek was completed overnight. The bridge, a 76‑year‑old structure that has been a bottleneck for drivers and pedestrians, now has fresh pavement markings and all four lanes open to normal traffic.

What was done

The overnight effort focused on applying new pavement markings, a finishing touch that allows the bridge to operate safely and efficiently. With the markings in place, the city restored full traffic flow, giving commuters a smoother ride across the creek.

Ongoing work nearby

While the bridge itself is back in service, drivers should still expect some inconvenience just south of the structure. One lane in each direction continues to run along the east side of 8th Street, squeezed between KRDO 13 and the Lower Gold Camp Road/Abbot Lane intersection. This temporary pattern began several weeks ago and will shift again in a few weeks when traffic moves to the west side of the street, allowing crews to work on the east side.

Water‑main replacement and sidewalk upgrades

The broader improvement project along 8th Street includes replacing a water main that runs between Motor City Drive and Cimarron Street. Crews are moving northward, tackling the water‑main work while also widening the sidewalk that replaces the old pedestrian bridge removed in June 2025. At the US 24 Frontage Road intersection, a dedicated right‑turn lane was added for northbound traffic, further easing congestion.

Unexpected repairs and future timeline

When crews began work on the west side of the bridge earlier this year, they discovered additional structural issues that required a crane to lower a new support pillar beneath the bridge. Officials had previously indicated that a new water main would be installed under the bridge once the project reached that stage.

City officials noted that repaving the construction zone was hoped to be finished before winter, but it remains uncertain whether that will happen this season. The entire improvement effort, which began in June 2025, is now slated for full completion next spring.

Community impact

Local residents and commuters have expressed relief that the bridge is finally back in service, ending months of frustration with lane closures and detours. The project’s phased approach—working on one side of the bridge while keeping traffic moving on the other—has minimized disruption, though some lingering lane squeezes will persist until the final phases are finished.

City officials encourage drivers to stay alert for the remaining temporary traffic patterns and to follow posted signage as work continues. The improvements are expected to enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians, supporting the growing needs of Colorado Springs’ southwest corridor.
