Incumbents retain all three contested Sangamon County Board seats and win key congressional races

Springfield, Ill. – Voters in Sangamon County affirmed continuity on Tuesday’s midterm ballot, re‑electing every incumbent who faced a challenger. Only three of the 17 county board districts were contested, and each incumbent emerged victorious.

County board results

Democrat Reggie Guyton secured another term in District 21, defeating Republican Connie Sebok by roughly 415 votes, according to unofficial results from the Sangamon County Clerk’s office. In District 12, Democrat Sheila Feipel won a decisive victory over challenger Joel Oschwal, tallying 2,220 votes to Oschwal’s 1,460.

The sole Republican win came in District 7, where Rich King defeated Tara Bergschneider by about 640 votes, posting a 1,596‑to‑952 margin.

Congressional races

At the federal level, Republican incumbent Mary Miller retained her seat in Illinois’ 15th Congressional District, besting Democrat Jennifer Todd. While some precincts were still being counted early Wednesday, Miller’s lead appeared solid.

Democratic incumbent Nikki Budzinski also held her seat, unofficially defeating Champaign County Board member Jeff Wilson.

Landlord registry referendum

Springfield voters weighed an advisory referendum on a proposed landlord registry. Unofficial figures show a strong endorsement, with 29,077 votes in favor and 12,663 against – roughly a three‑to‑one margin.

The measure has sparked debate. Some landlords claim the registry could lead to higher taxes, though they have not provided data to substantiate that concern. Both sides of the campaign have been accused of spreading misinformation. City officials say public forums will be scheduled to refine the ordinance, after which any tax implications will be evaluated.

What’s next

With the county board composition unchanged, the board can continue its work on local services, budgeting, and infrastructure without the disruption of a partisan shift. The landlord registry will move to the design phase, where community input and expert analysis will shape the final ordinance.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming public meetings and to participate in the ongoing dialogue surrounding the registry and its potential impact on housing and local tax policy.
