Holy Smoke Event in Pleasant Hill to Aid Injured Teen Hunter Harris

The Rising Sun Church of Christ in Pleasant Hill is hosting its annual Holy Smoke Backyard Barbecue Competition and Car Show to support a local teen, Hunter Harris, who suffered severe brain and physical injuries in a car accident last summer. The event, a cherished community tradition, will take place at 1 p.m. and features family-friendly activities, drawing hundreds of participants each year.

A Community Tradition with a Purpose

This year, the event will focus on raising funds for Hunter Harris, a 17-year-old student from Southeast Polk High School. Hunter was involved in a tragic accident on July 31, when he was struck by a distracted driver while riding his bike. The accident left him with significant injuries, and he now requires specialized care and equipment, including a wheelchair-accessible van.

Michael Rains, an elder at the church and head of the Holy Smoke ministry, emphasized that the funds raised do not benefit the church but are directed entirely to individuals or families in need. This practice has been a hallmark of the event for over a decade. “We’re supposed to go outside the walls, and we’re supposed to reach the people around us,” Rains stated.

Support from the Community

Heather Wagner, Hunter’s teacher, has been a strong advocate for him and his family. She approached the Holy Smoke team earlier this year to make Hunter the beneficiary of the fundraiser. Wagner describes Hunter as a lively and energetic young man whose life was drastically changed by the accident. Despite his current challenges, Hunter has a dedicated medical team and community support.

The event will also feature a silent auction, a first for the Holy Smoke team. Initially expecting about 10 donations, organizers have now received 40, with all proceeds going to support Hunter’s needs. Pastor Steve Rowland of Rising Sun Church expressed the church’s commitment to helping the Harris family, highlighting the hope and resilience found in faith.

Community members are encouraged to participate in the event or make donations to assist Hunter and his family. As of Thursday afternoon, organizers were still seeking one more participant for the barbecue competition. More information on how to contribute can be found on the event’s website.
