During the November meeting of the SCSD#2 Board of Trustees, the Sheridan community gathered to celebrate the achievements of its 4A boys’ cross‑country team. Coach Art Baures took the podium to introduce the athletes who earned the state championship title and to thank the board for its support.
Coach Baures praises dedication and teamwork
“It all starts in the off‑season track seasons,” Baures said, emphasizing the hard work and camaraderie that built the championship squad. He noted that the runners “train extremely hard, work together, and often practice in isolation,” underscoring the discipline required to compete at the highest level.
Student athletes recognized
The board honored senior runners Abraham Hughes, Ryder Shrest, Wyatt Veal, Aidan Luna and Grayson Moore for their contributions throughout the season. Sophomore Eli Balkenbush was singled out as the individual state champion, a distinction Baures highlighted as a testament to his talent and perseverance.
“We are very proud and very happy for them,” Baures said, adding that the team’s “tremendous race” reflected the collective effort of the athletes, coaches and supportive families.
Community pride and future outlook
Board members echoed the coach’s sentiments, expressing confidence that the program’s success will inspire younger students to pursue athletics and uphold the values of hard work and teamwork. The recognition ceremony reinforced the school’s commitment to fostering a strong, faith‑centered environment where families can celebrate the accomplishments of their children.
As the season concludes, the cross‑country team looks ahead to upcoming meets, aiming to build on this year’s triumph and continue representing Sheridan with distinction.
