President Trump Proposes ‘Trump Promenade’ at Lincoln Memorial

President Donald Trump has unveiled plans to construct a new promenade behind the Lincoln Memorial, a project he mentioned during a White House event on June 4. The proposed promenade, which some suggest naming the ‘Trump Promenade,’ is intended to connect the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River, enhancing pedestrian access to the area.

Connecting the Memorial to the River

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum explained that the promenade would include a pedestrian bridge leading visitors directly to the riverbank. Currently, there is no pedestrian access from the memorial to the Potomac, despite its proximity. This initiative is part of the McMillian Plan, an early 20th-century vision for the National Mall.

“People come from around the world and don’t realize that just 100 yards away is the beautiful Potomac River,” Burgum noted, emphasizing the project’s potential to enhance visitor experience.

Ongoing Construction Efforts

The promenade is one of several construction projects President Trump has initiated in the nation’s capital. Among these is a controversial 250-foot arch on the Memorial Avenue Corridor, which has faced legal challenges and public opposition. Trump describes the arch as a tribute to military victories, asserting, “Nobody’s had more military victories, including recently, than we have.”

Additionally, Trump has undertaken the demolition of the East Wing of the White House to make way for a new 90,000-square-foot ballroom complex. However, these projects have sparked legal disputes, as Congress has not authorized the construction of the memorial arch, nor has it approved the ballroom expansion. Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group, argues that congressional approval is a statutory requirement for such federal land developments.

As these projects progress, they continue to reshape the landscape of Washington, D.C., reflecting President Trump’s vision for the capital.
