Springdale Gears Up for World Cup with Community Events and Watch Parties

As the FIFA World Cup approaches, Springdale, Arkansas, is preparing to unite its community through a series of soccer-themed events. The Downtown Springdale Alliance, in collaboration with local soccer organizers, is hosting watch parties and community gatherings to celebrate the world’s most popular sporting event.

Community Engagement Through Soccer

At the heart of these celebrations is Luther George Park, where a large outdoor screen has been installed to broadcast select World Cup matches throughout June and July. The Downtown Springdale Alliance has designed these events to not only showcase the games but also to support and engage the local community. Nando Garcia, the events and programs director for the Alliance, emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment for residents to gather and enjoy the matches together.

Garcia explained, “We’re going to do not only the group stage matches, but also the knockout rounds. Not only are we going to have some games with amazing screen and sound, but we’re also going to be designing the whole program centered around supporting the community.” The watch parties will feature local nonprofits, churches, food vendors, and community groups, encouraging attendees to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the festivities.

Activating Luther George Park

The initiative is part of a broader effort to activate Luther George Park and create more regular opportunities for residents to gather downtown. “We want to activate the park in a way that brings people together, not only just one-off giant events that happen every year, but things that happen continuously throughout the week,” Garcia said. The outdoor screen will remain in place through the summer, also serving as a venue for movie nights, festivals, and other community events.

Soccer’s Growing Popularity

Soccer’s popularity in Springdale and throughout Northwest Arkansas makes it a natural fit for these community-building efforts. “Soccer connects in a lot of ways,” Garcia noted. “Soccer is a language that everyone can speak.” This sentiment is echoed by Kendall Spencer, director of soccer operations at Next Level Soccer Center, an indoor facility also hosting World Cup festivities. Spencer highlighted the remarkable growth of soccer in the region over the past decade, driven by a diverse population that includes many international residents.

Spencer remarked, “In the last seven to 10 years, it’s been amazing to see the population boom and to see soccer grow in our area.” The Next Level Soccer Center plans to show evening matches throughout the tournament while continuing to host leagues for players of all skill levels.

Fostering Community Connections

For both Garcia and Spencer, the World Cup is more than just a series of matches; it’s an opportunity to strengthen community bonds. “I’m really liking how the entire community is coming together,” Spencer said. “Different cities showing games at the park or at restaurants. Areas and places where people can gather and watch games, because our area, it is a giant melting pot with the Walmart and Tyson community here, so many people from other countries, and I think that just adds to the excitement of the World Cup.”

As the countdown to kickoff continues, organizers remain focused on using soccer as a means to foster connections and celebrate the diverse community of Northwest Arkansas. “We’re not changing things,” Garcia said of Springdale. “We’re just turning the volume up.”
