President Trump to Attend NBA Finals Game in Support of Knicks

President Donald Trump, a longtime supporter of the New York Knicks, has announced his intention to attend an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden next week. This visit, at the invitation of Knicks owner James Dolan, would make Trump the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, according to the NBA.

Trump’s Enthusiasm for the Knicks

Trump expressed his excitement about the upcoming games, stating, “The answer is yes — he’s invited me, I’m going,” referring to Dolan’s invitation. The president mentioned he is considering attending Game 3 on Monday, with the possibility of also attending Game 4 on Wednesday. Trump, who is managing significant national and international issues, including tensions in Iran and upcoming midterm elections, still made time to watch the Knicks’ victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of the series.

In his remarks, Trump praised the Knicks for their performance, particularly their ability to contain Spurs center Victor Wembanyama. “I say, how do you guard this guy? He’s 7-foot-5 and he’s got a great shot, right? But they find a way to do it. They’re really great,” Trump commented.

NBA’s Perspective on Presidential Attendance

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver noted that while former presidents have attended NBA games, Trump’s attendance would be unprecedented for a sitting president. Silver recalled Trump’s long-standing support for the Knicks, dating back to before his political career. “Donald Trump, before he ever ran for office, he was a big Knicks fan,” Silver said, highlighting Trump’s frequent appearances at Knicks games and NBA drafts held at Madison Square Garden.

Silver emphasized the unifying power of sports, particularly in politically divided times. “We can emphasize what we have in common, not what pulls us apart,” Silver stated, expressing his enthusiasm for Trump’s participation in the event.

Security and Logistical Considerations

Trump’s presence at the game will necessitate increased security measures at Madison Square Garden, which may lead to longer transit times and logistical challenges for fans. Silver acknowledged these potential issues but expressed confidence that fans would understand the significance of the occasion. “I think the fans are very understanding of that,” Silver said, noting that Trump’s attendance adds to the event’s prominence.
