A Sarasota County bar, the 8-Ball Lounge, experienced a destructive incident early Thursday morning when a woman, wearing a motorcycle helmet, launched bricks through the establishment’s windows and doors. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the unprovoked attack, which was captured on surveillance footage.
Incident Details
The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. at the 8-Ball Lounge, a neighborhood bar located off Webber Street in the Southgate area. Surveillance video shows the woman arriving in a car, unloading bricks, and hurling them through the windows and doors of the bar.
Once inside, the woman continued her rampage by destroying the bar’s liquor inventory. According to the bar owner, Michael Calomeris, approximately 35 to 40 bottles were smashed, leaving glass scattered throughout the establishment.
Community Impact
The 8-Ball Lounge, a community staple for over 55 years, quickly responded to the damage. Despite suffering a few thousand dollars in losses, the bar boarded up its windows and reopened its doors, maintaining its reputation as a place for a “Good Time with Good Friends.”
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are still searching for the suspect, whose identity they believe they know. Calomeris mentioned that law enforcement officials had interacted with the woman the previous day and are investigating whether mental health issues played a role in the incident.
While the bar has faced minor issues over its decades of operation, this level of destruction is unprecedented. The community remains supportive, and the 8-Ball Lounge continues to serve as a gathering place despite the setback.
