New Italian Cafe Inspired by Bryan’s Mr. G’s to Open in College Station

College Station is set to welcome a new culinary addition, g’s Southside Italian Cafe, this coming July. The cafe will be located at Caprock Crossing, taking over the former site of Howdy’s Texas Grill’d Pizza, which closed in December 2021. This new establishment is a tribute to the beloved Mr. G’s Pizzeria in Bryan, although it will operate independently.

Family Inspiration and Expansion

Owner Susan Carnes shared that her family had been considering expansion for several years before finding the perfect location. “We walked in and just felt it,” Carnes expressed. “It is such a blessing. Every door that we’ve always prayed to be open to do this has absolutely double opened.” This sentiment highlights the family’s commitment to their faith and the community.

Diverse Offerings

g’s Southside Italian Cafe will offer a variety of options including breakfast, coffee, pastries, desserts, and Italian dishes, along with select pizzas from Mr. G’s. The cafe will feature a full coffee bar, a full-service bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and an ice cream counter. Some menu items will draw inspiration from recipes once served at Cenare, a former College Station restaurant operated by the late Mr. G’s wife, Houda. The larger kitchen space will also allow the business to centralize much of its food preparation and production operations.

Opening Plans

The cafe plans to host a friends-and-family soft opening in mid-July, with a grand opening scheduled for the start of the fall semester. While the new cafe will have its own identity, it is intended as a nod to the legacy of Mr. G’s founder. Carnes noted, “G had a baby G. It is standing on its own two feet. It is a nod and a tribute to Mr. G.” The cafe will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with potential shorter hours on Sundays.

Mr. G’s Pizzeria will continue to operate in Historic Downtown Bryan, maintaining its presence and legacy in the community.
