The City of Durango, Colorado, is gearing up for a grand celebration of American Independence with its 4th of July Parade, marking 250 years since the nation’s founding and 150 years of Colorado statehood. The parade, themed ‘We the People! Past, Present and Future,’ will take place on Main Avenue on Saturday, July 4, at 4:30 pm.
Parade Participation and Registration
Residents and local organizations are encouraged to participate by entering floats that reflect the theme. Registration for parade entries is required, with applications available online or at the Durango Recreation Center. The entry fee is $5, and the deadline for submissions is Monday, June 29. Prizes will be awarded for the best floats, with $300 for first place, $200 for second, and $100 for third.
For those looking for inspiration, the parade committee has provided a list of float ideas on the 4th of July website. This is a wonderful opportunity for community members to showcase their creativity and patriotism.
Children’s Parade and Additional Festivities
The festivities will also include the 2nd Annual Children’s Costume and Float Parade, set to begin at 3:30 pm at Buckley Park. This event does not require advance registration, and participants are asked to gather at the southwest corner of Buckley Park near 12th Street by 3:15 pm.
The 4th of July Parade is just one of 30 events planned for the Four Days of the Fourth celebration, which runs from Thursday, July 2, to Sunday, July 5. The celebration features six free concerts, two rodeos, a boxing match, a pie-eating contest, and more. After the parade, spectators can enjoy a street dance at Buckley Park with music from the Grammy-award-winning Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
