Local letters raise concerns over county commissioner race, sales‑tax marketing and federal representation

Several Casper readers used the Oil City News letters page to voice strong opinions on local and statewide issues ahead of upcoming elections. The letters, submitted to the newspaper’s editorial section, highlight concerns about a county‑commissioner candidate, the city’s use of tax‑funded advertising, and the quality of Wyoming’s representation in Washington.

Questioning Matt Keating’s record

One writer, Ken Carpenter, warned voters that Matt Keating, who is seeking another term as Natrona County commissioner, previously served as county assessor and faced more than 3,000 appeals in a single year. Carpenter expressed a lack of confidence in Keating’s ability to manage the commissioner’s responsibilities and urged residents to vote for either the Republican or Democratic nominee, but not for Keating.

Critique of the optional 1% sales‑tax campaign

Another letter, from Ross Schriftman, focused on the City of Casper’s spending of at least $40,000 of taxpayer money to promote a “yes” vote on the optional 1% sales tax that applies county‑wide. Schriftman detailed the costs: $16,000 for a survey conducted by an out‑of‑state firm with leading questions, and two mailings at $12,000 each. He also noted “One Penny” signs posted at government‑owned properties.

While acknowledging that the tax revenue has funded basic services such as policing, fire protection and emergency response, Schriftman argued that the promotional language was biased. He cited examples like “Sales tax is the primary funding source used to build and sustain Wyoming communities,” countering that it is the hard work of citizens that builds communities. He also pointed out that the tax is a one‑percent levy, not a one‑cent tax, and warned that the city’s council often reallocates the funds to other priorities despite a survey indicating road repair as the top concern.

Call for genuine representation in Washington

Whitney Nelson‑Wharton submitted a letter urging Wyoming voters to consider the character of their federal representatives. She criticized career politicians who, in her view, prioritize campaign fundraising over serving Wyoming families. Nelson‑Wharton highlighted James Byrd and Lisa Kinney as candidates who, she says, are willing to travel extensively across the state to meet constituents and focus on public service rather than personal ambition.

She contrasted them with incumbent U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman and Rep. Chuck Gray, accusing the latter of avoiding debates and neglecting Wyoming voters. The letter concluded with a plea for voters to choose candidates who truly serve the people, emphasizing the importance of accountability, empathy, and putting community interests ahead of personal prestige.

Speculation on election fraud claims

Finally, Gina Douglas wrote a letter asserting that President Donald Trump’s claims about massive voter fraud would be validated if Republicans lose control of Congress in a landslide. Douglas suggested that such a loss would prove foreign interference by Iran and China, leading to a national‑security emergency order to halt certification of election results and to conduct a new, paper‑ballot election overseen by the Department of Justice and the National Guard.

These letters reflect a range of concerns among Casper residents as the community heads toward the upcoming ballot. They illustrate local engagement with issues of candidate integrity, fiscal transparency, and the broader political climate.
