DEA El Paso Warns of Fentanyl Mixed with Dangerous Synthetic Drugs

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in El Paso, Texas, is raising alarms about the escalating danger posed by fentanyl mixed with other synthetic drugs. This warning comes as part of a broader effort to inform the public about the evolving drug threats impacting communities nationwide.

Emerging Drug Threats

According to the DEA, illicit fentanyl is increasingly being combined with a variety of potent synthetic substances, making the drug supply more unpredictable and lethal. These combinations include substances such as xylazine, nitazenes, cychlorphine, and medetomidine. Many of these substances are not approved for human use and can be undetectable to users, increasing the risk of overdose and death.

Xylazine and medetomidine are typically used by veterinarians to sedate animals, while nitazenes and cychlorphine are potent synthetic opioids. The DEA has identified 22 unique nitazene compounds since 2020, with 21 classified as Schedule I controlled substances. These compounds often emerge as regulatory measures and enforcement actions target existing analogues.

Community Impact and Safety Measures

The DEA emphasizes that today’s illicit drug supply is more dangerous than ever, urging the public to be aware that even a single pill can be fatal. Public awareness and prevention are critical components of the DEA’s strategy to combat this threat. For more information, the public is encouraged to visit DEA.gov/fentanylfree and DEA.gov/onepill.

Recently, the DEA’s drug lab team investigated a deadly incident in Mountainair, New Mexico, highlighting the regional impact of these dangerous drug combinations. The DEA El Paso Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Jeffrey Castillo, who oversees the lab team, is expected to provide further insights into the situation.
